Fuji Mountain

Sunday, February 10, 2013
Leader: Harold Thompson
Xski: 14.6 miles, 2890 ft (Difficult)

Rarely in February is one able to lounge at the summit of a Cascade peak on a windless sunny day. Fuji Mountain was that rare day. Eight skiers left Waldo Lake snow park at 8:50 AM for the two road miles of travel before turning off on to the Fuji Mountain Trail. Steady climbing brought the group up to the plateau and on past Birthday Lake. Skins were used by all skiers to climb the final steep two miles, and snow buildup on the bottom of the skis was a problem in the softening conditions. The first were on the summit at 1:40 PM and all were basking in the sunshine by 2:00 PM. With lots of variation in equipment and downhill technique, everyone headed back down making turns where ever possible. All skiers were back to the cars by 5:15 PM to conclude a very long, but fun day.
