Redtop Mtn

Sunday, January 27, 2013
Leader: Gordon Sayre
Xski: 8 miles, 1500 ft (Difficult)

Snow conditions were excellent for Redtop mountain this time, with one to four inches of fresh snow on top of a firm crust from three weeks of dry, clear weather in the Cascades. It was snowing lightly all afternoon. A couple of the skiers made the climb using crown-base ski patterns, while the rest used climbing skins. The route was clearly tracked by other parties on the way up. For our descent we took a ridge on the north side of the mountain, and then made a long and scenic traverse back to Pretty Lake. The group was a mix of Obsidians back-country veterans and a couple of newer faces, and everyone kept the same pace both up and down. A marvelous outing on a great day in our local mountains.
