North Bank Habitat/West Access

Leader: Janet Jacobsen
Hike: 8 miles, 1200 ft (Moderate)

Three of us took some detours to avoid the Eugene Marathon route so that we could meet at the LCC parking lot at 8:00. By 9:30 we were hiking up Blacktail Ridge Road to Middle Ridge Road, and then skipping Chasm Creek Trail for the panoramic views of the North Boundary Ridge. After lunch we started down the Bear Tree Trail. We didn’t think to question the name of the trail? Did we miss something? The trail signs at intersections were most helpful! We almost took a wrong turn where a big Madrone tree had fallen on the trail. On previous hikes, Obsidians always wanted to stop for a photo of this majestic tree. We were back at the cars around 2:30. Fortunately the warning about chiggers did not materialize but the poison oak was in its red glory. The overcast sky and cooler temperature was perfect for the open oak savannah hike. Two ticks traveled back to Eugene with us.
