Castle Rock

Sunday, May 20, 2012
Leader: Chris Stockdale
Hike: 11.4 miles, 2600 ft (Difficult)

The long streak of May’s dry sunny weather stretched far enough that the hike up Castle Rock took place on a mild spring day. Although fairly long (11.4 miles with 2600’ elevation gain), the trail is so well graded that most hikers have no problems reaching the top. The group of nine Obsidians and one nonmember, although climbing at different paces, all reach the old lookout site on top in about 2-1/2 hours or faster and were rewarded with views of the Three Sisters, Mt. Washington and other snowy peaks. They enjoyed a leisurely hour-long lunch in the sunshine before heading back down the trail. Thanks to Marianne Camp and Diantha Hull for driving. Liz Hurkes was happy to have her membership application signed as she had recently qualified with a climb up Diamond Peak as part of the Climb School's graduation climb.

Members: Chris Stockdale, Michael Quigley, Dick Hildreth, Daphne James, Marianne Camp, Steven Johnson, Janet Jacobsen, Moshe Rapaport, Diantha Hull. Nonmembers: Liz Hurkes.
