Red Top Mountain

Sunday, March 11, 2012
Leader: Frank Chemotti
Xski: 7 miles, 2300 ft (Difficult)

Several inches of light snow had come to the Willamette Pass area overnight, and more was falling as we arrived at Crescent Lake Sno Park. We put skis on in the parking lot and set out. We found the start of the Pretty Lake trail, where old, faintly visible tracks guided us. We followed the trail until about 5500ft, where we turned southwest to break trail. The route from there followed the gradual ramp that eventually arrives at the summit from the south. In the open areas leading up to the summit, we climbed through strong winds, while sunbreaks highlighted vortices of blowing snow. A partly sheltered area near the top provided a lunch spot. The group decided to descend the north ridge for a consistent 1000ft run down to the flats near Pretty Lake. Fresh snow here was a foot deep, and the turns at the top were especially wonderful. We had to climb a small amount to get past Pretty Lake, but then we made a few more turns down the slope on the other side and reconnected with our uphill tracks for an easy slide out. Time to summit was 4 hours; 2 hours to return.
