It was the first ski trip of the year for the majority of skiers—but the wonderful snow on the Midnight Lake trail was worth waiting for. We glided over six inches of fresh snow and headed up the PCT to Midnight Lake. With snow falling and strong breeze over the lake, we decided to wait until Bechtel Shelter for lunch. On the way, Steve tried a little water skiing while crossing the little creek just below Midnight lake—a good reminder that while water might be covered with snow, it often isn’t frozen. Though we didn’t find blue diamonds to mark our route until just before Abernethy Road, we easily followed tracks made by previous skiers to arrive at the shelter. The most difficult terrain of the entire trip was the descent from the road down to the shelter, so after lunch we took the more gradual rise back up to the road. From there it was smooth gliding back to the parking lot, for a great first ski of the season—even if we had to wait until late January for the season to begin!Members: Sue Wolling, Ellen King, Lisa Marcus, Steven Johnson, Nancy Whitfield.
