Spencer Butte Trail Maintenance

Saturday, September 29, 2012
Leader: Matthew Bell
Trl Mnt: 2 miles, 500 ft (Moderate)

Our group met at 9 a.m. for our first Saturday morning trail maintenance outing of the fall. For this month’s outing we planned to clear and improve the drainage features along the West and Main trails on Spencer Butte. We each grabbed a couple of tools and started up the steep West Trail. We cleared drainage and raked leaves and other duff off of the cobbled sections of the trail. We brought along a mini-sledge and alternated pounding in all the rebar sticking up out of the trail that we could. (Some is cemented in the rocks and can’t be pounded down.) We made it up to the summit in time to enjoy some well deserved snacks and lemonade. We then hiked down the Main Trail back to the parking lot continuing to work along the way.
