The sun didn't come out for our hike, but we didn't let that dampen our spirits. Sixteen of us enjoyed two short hikes through the Oregon Dunes south of Florence. The first was along the Lagoon Trail which circles an oxbow slough which was once part of the Siltcoos River. Beth, who got there a little early, was rewarded by a river otter playing in the slough. The second was along the banks of the Siltcoos River to the ocean. There were too many of us enjoying each others company to do a lot of bird watching, but we did see a kingfisher, buffleheads, mallards and lots of great blue herons. At the beach, 4 curious sea lions (seals?) kept popping up in the surf watching us watching them. Almost no one had done the hikes before and almost everyone agreed that they'd like to return one day to take their time and really explore the coastal woods and dunes, maybe even see a snowy plover in the spring.Members: Lyn Gilman-Garrick, Suzanne Steussy, Jorry Rolfe, Barbara Bruns, Janet Jacobsen, John Moser, Noy Rathakette, Joella Ewing, Tom Musselwhite, Julie Dorland, Moshe Rapaport, Beth Roy.
