Spencer Butte/Amazon Headwaters

Sunday, April 24, 2011
Leader: Janet Jacobsen
Hike: 6.4 miles, 1530 ft (Moderate)

The prediction for rain prompted several online cancelations leaving three nonmembers to hike up Spencer Butte for the first time. Recently moved to Eugene, Doug participated on the Trail Maintenance project the day before. Laura and Jesus, OSU students, began their Eugene“adventure” the night before with contra and tango dancing. Their google search for Martin Street led them to Owl Street off of Fox Hollow but somehow in the nick of time we were able to meet up at the Fox Hollow trailhead. It almost turned into a misadventure when Jesus accidentally locked his keys in the car. His dexterity with a clothes hangar saved the day. As for the weather, there was a light rain for a few minutes when we ate our lunch on top. Flower update: Fawn lilies, calypso orchids, trillium, fairy bells, and bleeding hearts were welcome spring color along the trail. Near the summit we discovered shooting stars and grass widow. It was fun to share the trail with such appreciative folks even if two of them wore orange and black clothing.

Members: Jacobsen, Janet. Nonmembers: Alc, Jesus, Soto, Laura, Becker, Douglas.
