Scheduling a hiking trip to the Cascade foothills in the Fall is always a gamble with the weather so not surprisingly my first date for this trip, Oct. 12th, had to be postponed for both rain and snow. I rescheduled for the 16th hoping the predicted break in the weather would hold. The day started with beautiful blue skies as we headed to the Horesepasture trailhead over the Cougar reservoir dam. Unfortunately the road was closed by a construction crew that day so we got together to decide on a different destination in the area. Our new goal was Macduff Mt. as it's trailhead was close and it offered great views of the Cascades. Keeping our fingers crossed that the gate was opened, it was, we made our way up the rather steep and rocky gravel road to begin our hike. We did encounter a few inches of snow from the previous weeks storm, however it was not enough to stop us. We were rewarded with a spectacular view of the freshly coated mountains unobscured by either clouds, smoke, or haze. For after our hike we stopped at the Vida Market for ice cream cones and then the Leaburg Fish Hatchery to feed the fish.Members: Steven Johnson, Ellen Johnson, David Cooper, Ben Brown, Janet Jacobsen, Keiko Bryan, Barbara Orsi.
