Marys Peak(North Side)

Saturday, April 29, 2017
Leader: Mike Smith
Hike: 12 miles, 2000 ft (Difficult)

I finally led a trip up Marys Peak with decent, even if not quite optimal, visibility. We had nice temperatures on the north side and had lunch on top in bright sunshine with hazy views of the northern Cascades. Marys Peak will see 1m30s totality on 21 August. We descended the East Ridge Trail, finding about a dozen major blowdowns right below the ridge where the meadow joins the forest. After the bend in the trail while descending further, there were about 4-6 very large (24-36" diameter) blowdowns. Right now, I would avoid the East Ridge trail, although one can certainly navigate his or her way up it. We descended to near Conner's Camp and then walked the road through the Corvallis watershed back to the cars. We welcomed Patrick and Christian Mucker, both getting into better shape, and Alice Laffey, for her second hike with the Obsidians. This was a good group, who did very well on the long climb to the top and handled the blowdowns well!

Members: Mike Smith, David Lodeesen, Marguerite Cooney, Rebecca Eastwood, David Cooper, Joel Greer. Nonmembers: Rachelle Masin, Alice Laffey, Patrick Mucker, Andrew Mucker.
