Mt Hood

Friday–Saturday, May 5–6, 2017
Leader: Danneille Harris
Climb: 7.2 miles, 5200 ft

The start from the Timberline parking lot was brutally cold and windy as the team headed up around 1 am. A break at the top of Palmer had us all donning the big puffy jackets and we continued to wear them the rest of the way up until we popped out in the sunshine at the top of the Pearly Gates.

At the summit we took some time to enjoy snacks, pictures, and hugs. This was the first summit of Hood for 5 of the 7 climbers. As the narrow chute of Pearly was dangerously crowded we opted to descend the unused East chute. This route gave us some steep and spicy down climbing but protected well. Below Crater Rock the warming temps softened the snow just enough for great glissading far down the mountain.

The mountain gave the team a full value climb and we returned tired but satisfied. Thanks everyone for the good time and special thanks to Marge for the strong assist.
