Heceta Head Lighthouse

Saturday, June 8, 2013
Leader: Pat Soussan
Hike: 6 miles, 500 ft (Moderate)

We were a group of five with California connections that arrived at Washburne beach to be greeted by a temperature of 53 degrees and windy conditions. After putting on wind breakers and fleece jackets, we made quick introductions and set off along the sand. Before heading up the Hobbit trail, we were shedding layers and couldn't have had better weather for the remainder of the day. We admired the beauty of the Oregon coast during our hike from various vantage points. The lighthouse renovations have been completed and today was an official opening, but there were no tours available for us. There are new interpretive signs, as well as, souvenir t-shirts and magnets available for purchase. We ate our lunch at the lighthouse grounds while basking in the warm sun and, thankfully, were sheltered from the wind that was still blowing on the north side of Heceta Head. Thanks to Sandra, Maura, Andy and Brian for the interesting conversations and making the hike such a pleasant trip.
