Coyote Creek

September 24, 2010

Nine hardy Obsidians and one nonmember met in the Target parking lot on West 11th at 9:00 a.m. and proceeded to the Fern Ridge Wildlife Area’s Headquarters on Cantrell Road. Resident wildlife biologist Wayne Morrow then discussed work in the wildlife refuge, fielded questions and led a tour through their facilities featuring the wonderful work performed by their volunteers. We saw photos of a good size bear that was captured on camera during a nighttime “raid” on the compound, and we viewed a variety of mounted specimens of wildlife from the area. After watching a shipment of pheasants unloaded into a holding pen, we proceeded to the Coyote Creek put-in and launched our assortment of canoes, kayaks, and one inflatable. From there we paddled down Coyote Creek, under West 11th Ave and into Fern Ridge Reservoir. Wood ducks, egrets, two otters, and other birds and wildlife entertained us along the way. The weather was great for a fall paddle and all agreed the trip was a fitting end to the summer boating season. One note: as we neared Gilbert Island we discovered what appears to be a relatively new facility (complete with solar panels) sprouting among the rushes and surrounded by KEEP OUT signs. Participants were Lana Lindstrom, Nancy Hansen (nonmember), Ken Kodama, Judy Ness, Clara Emlen, Dick Hildreth, Pat Soussan, John Moser, Joella Ewing, and Tom Musselwhite (leader).
