Old McKenzie Highway

June 26, 2010

Since there was still four feet of snow on McKenzie Highway on the originally planned date for this ride, we re-scheduled—and managed to stay within the time when the road was open to bicycles, but closed to motor vehicles. The result was a wonderful, quiet ride among a steady trickle of bicyclists. We enjoyed not only the cool forest cover and spectacular views of Cascade Peaks, but also the smooth pavement of a highway that has been closed for re-surfacing over the past few years. The nice conditions made for a comfortable ascent. Judging from the gears I used, the climb is challenging, but not steep—like a very long, curvy Fox Hollow Road. The new pavement and lack of cars made the descent much less treacherous than it has felt in the past. Only two of us enjoyed this great ride: Jackie Murdoff (non-member) and Sue Wolling (leader).
