Opal Creek

June 19, 2010

Ten eager hikers left Eugene under cloudy skies. The 207 mile round trip drive was long but well worth it. At the trailhead, over 30 cars were parked and we all wondered how many people were actually hiking. Come to find out, the Opal Creek Research Center was having an educational overnighter at Jawbone Flats. As we started out, shuttle vans were bringing out all the participants. The weather cleared up somewhat, and the hike was pleasant. Opal Creek was quite full and the waterfalls were stunning to see. We ate lunch overlooking Opal Pool and enjoyed the sound of the falls. After exploring Jawbone Flats, we headed back down to the parking lot, in anticipation of pie and ice cream! The three vehicles and ten hungry hikers stopped at The Chalet Cafe for homemade milkshakes, pie, ice cream, hot chocolate and coffee. A good time was had by all.

Hikers were members Jennifer Barnes (leader), Daniele Delaby, Pat Esch, Karla Rusow and Suzanne Steussy; and nonmembers Leslie Grayner, Chuck Harpham, Richie Haslag, Jim Whitfield and Joanne Whitfield.
