Lowell Bridge Loop

October 4, 2009

We were supposed to bike up Big Fall Creek, but the weather didn't cooperate. Only four of a planned group of 13 arrived at Lowell State Park to ride up Big Fall Creek Road. With a temperature in the mid 40s, low clouds and light drizzle, the remaining four opted for a three mile hike to the Lowell covered bridge. We began hiking through the woods next to the reservoir as we headed back towards town. Reaching town, we went through a small local park and walked over our first covered bridge - the Cannon Street covered bridge — a small (maybe six feet end to end) bridge that took us over a muddy spot as we headed towards our primary objective. The Lowell covered bridge has a very nice set of large, well-lit interpretive signs with lots of pictures and information about the history of Lowell and the covered bridge. After soaking up some history (and thankfully, no rain) we headed back to the cars, satisfied with an unplanned but enjoyable Sunday hike. The four hardy hikers were Barb Bruns, Peter and Kitson Graham and Stewart Hoeg.
