Finley Wildlife Refuge

April 4, 2009

Our birding group enjoyed the annual Finley Wildlife Refuge hike in search of dusky Canada geese. These specific Canadian geese have limited summer and winter ranges. As they spend their winters in the Willamette Valley, the refuge was designed to provide sufficient food and a safe winter sanctuary. The geese then return to nest along Alaska’s Cooper River Delta. McFadden Marsh was our first stop followed by the Mill Pond Loop. Along the way we enjoyed the sprinkling of wildflowers.

Hikers were Kylia Bussey, Denise Butler, Pat Esch, Lyn Gilman-Garrick, Jerry Hawn Sachiko Iwasaki, Ray Jensen, Mary Mori, Margaret Prentice, Rich Romm, Chris Shuraleff and Rick Ahrens, leader.
