Duck Pond to Pre’s Rock

November 6, 2008

Despite a forecast of rain, we had seven Obsidians bundled up and prepared and raring to go. It wasn’t long before layers were being shed as the weather turned decidedly warm and dry. From the Alton Baker Park duck pond we took the river trail to Autzen Bridge and crossed to the campus. We toured a variety of large pits (where the new basketball arena is planned) and construction sites and headed up 15th to Birch and the climb to Skyline Drive (which offered panoramic views overlooking Alton Baker Park and the valley). We paid our respects to Pre and checked out all the tributes left at his memorial and then headed down via Hendricks Park and a stop at Eugene City Bakery before crossing back over the bridge. From all accounts it was a much enjoyed hike and offered everyone new approaches to and perspectives of familiar locations. Hikers were Myron Cook, Sharon and Jim Duncan, Carol Fairbanks, Marshall Kandell (leader), Barb Revere and Lee Young.
