Vivian Lake

September 27, 2008

Under a cloudy cool Eugene morning in late September nine hardy souls started out with five goals in mind: hike to Vivian Lake, visit three waterfalls (Salt Creek, Diamond Creek and Fall Creek), view Mt. Yoran, pick huckleberries and most importantly return home in time for the Ducks vs. Washington game on TV. We did our introductions, collected money and decided carpool options. With nine hikers why not use two cars and reduce our carbon footprint? Since I just purchased my new Outback, sure I could stack two people in front and three in the back. Well thatís fine if you can find the seatbelt for the rear middle seat. With the help of Carol, Susan, Teresa and what seemed like hours of embarrassment to me, they located the seatbelt tucked away in the ceiling. After we located our 9th hiker, who was lost inside the YMCA, we finally departed Eugene at 8:20 a.m., arrived at Salt Creek at 9:44 a.m. and on the trail by 10 a.m. We started our hike along the Salt Creek loop, to the Vivian Lake trail. Then up into the Diamond Peak Wilderness area, with a view of Hill Creek Falls, which had very low water flow but was still beautiful. We arrived at the lake around noon and ate our lunch with Mt. Yoran in view. By now we had accomplished most of our goals: view of Vivian Lake, Mt. Yoran, Salt Creek Falls, Hills Creek Falls. After lunch we started our return, picking berries and a quick view of Diamond Creek falls. We then made a mad rush back to the trailhead and were back in Eugene for the game, mission completed. Thanks to a great group of hikers. Members: Nola Nelson, Susan Sanazaro, Don Colgan, Abbott Sayre, (who both filled out membership applications). Non Members: Peggy Rubinstein, Michelle Miller, Carol Anderson, Teresa (no last name given).
