Belknap Crater

September 21, 2008

With only one person, Barb Revere, signed up, I skipped the SEHS meeting and picked her up on the way through Springfield. As we headed out, we soon encountered light drizzle, but anticipating better weather in the mountains we kept going. On reaching the trailhead, the drizzle eased up, and by 9:30 when we started north on the PCT the drizzle had stopped. As we entered the Little Belknap lava field the visibility was very limited, creating a bit of an eerie atmosphere. After another 2.5 miles through the open lava, we reached Little Belknap, when a new wave of serious drizzle moved in, along with a good wind. We decided to bag it and beat a hasty retreat. The rain increased and we were glad when we made it back to the car. We also decided to bag our bag lunches and headed to Finn Rock for a proper lunch. John Jacobsen, leader.
