Heceta Head/Hobbit Trail

August 10, 2007

Our group of enthusiastic hikers left Eugene, on a sunny August morning, in three cars. After parking at Washburne State Park we walked south on the beach toward the Hobbit Trail. Some of the group had never done this hike before and it is always fun to introduce it to new people. Not only was the sun shining at the coast but it was warm with no wind on the beach. This perfect weather was with us the whole day. We met various out of state people on the trail and had short chats with them. A couple people brought their cameras so they had several photo ops. Upon reaching the lighthouse we had lunch and three people went on the free tour of Heceta Lighthouse. The return route was still cool enough to be pleasant and we looped back along the China Creek Trail, through Washburne Campground, and to our cars. The leader stayed on the coast while the rest of the group returned to Eugene. Eleven year old Jordan Lewis was a very strong, fast hiker on his first Obsidian trip with his Grandmother, Joyce Smith. This trip made Carol Armstrong’s third qualifying trip for Obsidian membership.

Hikers were: Carol Armstrong, Marcie Bushnell, Jordon Lewis, Ginny Reich, Bonnie Richman, Joyce Smith, and Sandra Larsen, leader.
