Tire Mountain

June 3, 2007

Sunday 06/03/07 was a mild, mostly sunny morning and stayed that way all day. Eleven of us met at the SEHS parking lot, had introductions, and arranged ourselves into two vehicles for the trip up Hwy 58 to Aufderheide Drive to the trail head of the Alpine Trail/Tire Mountain Trail. We left Eugene at 8:00 a.m. and began hiking about 9:30. The trail climbs gradually and contours up and down along the ridges to the former lookout. Along the way we passed through open spaces where various wild flowers were putting on a show. A few blossoms had finished their blooming. Many more were just beginning to display. Some had not yet stirred from their winter dormant season. We maintained a fairly easy pace and arrived at the lookout about noon and had lunch. We had some good views of Diamond Peak along the way. Views of the Sisters were few and fleeting through the vegetation and obstructing ridges. Hikers were Josh Emmons, age 14, Susan DeFoe, Pat Soussan, Nola Nelson, Phyllis Fisher, Carol Fairbanks, Susanne Twight-Alexander, Charles Wright, Leslie Wright, and Allan Coons, leader.
