Indian Creek to No Man Creek Falls

August 10, 2007

This eight mile round-trip hike was only 40 miles from camp, had a cumulative elevation gain of just 1000 ft., and had a nice waterfall as a destination. This made it a popular trip during both weeks of camp.

This trip had the youngest average age of any I had been on during camp as we had the Scherer twins along. One of the groups that had hiked it the previous day had learned that a baby bear carcass had been found near the trail. Undaunted, we used the tried-and-true techniques of staying together and making lots of noise to minimize the probability of having a bear encounter. As usual, it worked, and no bears were sighted (but alas, not much other wildlife either.) While the pace was a bit slower than I was used to, the Scherer kids were real troupers, and splashed across the creek fords with no complaints. We had lunch overlooking the falls. While there, a man and wife on horseback informed us that we had angered a stockman. What we had thought were retaining walls (we had parked close in front of them) turned out to be stock loading/unloading docks. The couple we talked to had had no problem getting their horses unloaded as they had a horse trailer with a ramp. But the stockman had a stock trailer without a ramp, and had to coax each of his horses to jump out. Oh well, live and learn.

Hikers were: Marianne Camp, John and Jan Jacobsen, Chris Minirich, Terry, Sam and Emily Scherer and Wayne Deeter, leader.
