Crocs Walk

July 31, 2007

After noticing how well Crocs work for short distance hiking on a couple of multi day climbs I decided to lead a local “Crocs Walk” at camp. We first walked down the the camp boulder, where Sue did a second Crocs ascent of the east edge. Marianne also climbed it in her tevas. We then dropped down to Beaver Creek and visited the ruins of a cabin. Then hiked up along the creek to the beaver ponds, following moose trails through the thick grasses and swamps. The pond on the south side of the road was clogged with what Nola informed us was duck weed, a nasty invasive spread by careless boaters. There was little wildlife there, so we crossed the road to the north side, which had not yet been overrun by the duck weed. On that side we viewed many different birds. We then trekked up the lane to camp, and hiked around “Loop D”, an abandoned camp loop now overgrown with grass, where we rested for a while on an overlook of Earthquake Lake and did some more bird watching. We were back at camp in time for lunch.

Several other groups did similar local walks during camp.

Crocs walkers (and others) were: Marianne Camp, Joella Ewing, John Mowat, Nola Nelson, Sue Sullivan and Wayne Deeter, leader.
