Spencer Butte

September 13, 2006

As it turned out, I took this hike alone. A non-member had called me the night before, saying that she and her four year-old daughter planned to meet me at the Spencer Butte parking lot, and would be making the hike with me. However, after picking blackberries at the parking lot for fifteen minutes beyond the specified time, it appeared they weren’t going to show. The weather was perfect, sunny and cool, and very few people were using the trail. I stayed to the far south side of the butte, both ascending and descending (hoping I wouldn’t end up in Goshen on my way down). It took me one hour and fifteen minutes, with a brief pause at the top to enjoy the view. I saw a woodpecker (Hairy, I think) on my way down. When I arrived home, there was a nice message from the woman saying that they wouldn’t be able to make the hike. —LaRee Beckley.
