Fall CreekMay 13, 2006Nine hikers car pooled from SEHS to Fall Creek via Hwy 58, taking the Lowell exit to the Unity Bridge, right on Big Fall Creek Road, then on to the trailhead at Dolly Varden Campground. The trail on this sunny day was shady, provided by a canopy of northern hemlock, red cedar and douglas fir. The Fall Creek river rushed along as we walked along the trail framed by dogwood, alder and vine maple. Wildflowers including bleeding hearts with carpets of shamrock-like oxalis were all around us. In quiet, deep spaces pools formed in the river which made it appear blue-green. Hiking the trail was an up and down experience, needing to watch out for the ruts and roots. There were several sturdy logs bridges which gave us a chance to rest a bit while looking at the scenery.
