Phantom Bridge

August 7, 2005

Meeting in Salem on a hot day the four of us headed out on Hwy 22 East towards Detroit Lake and on up the French Creek Rd. drainage on rough Forest Rd. 2207 for several miles to the trail head. Wendy’s SUV overheated at the trail head but we were confident it would cool down once we got back from the hike. Though the overall hike is five miles round trip it is not easy with numerous ups and downs with several steep sections on loose gravel. The trail followed a ridge line to Phantom Bridge and we were relieved to reach it. The natural Rock Arch provided a great lunch spot with views of Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood. On the way back we encountered a work party setting up camp for trail maintenance. Joining me (Danny Baihuber—member) were non-members Wendy Mitchell, Alice Parman and aptly named Numa LaPenyl who all provided great company. All three non-members will make the Obsidians proud to have them as members. Wendy’s SUV was fine for the rough few miles back to the pavement. We all enjoyed a treat at KC’s in Detroit of root beer floats for $2 for a nice way to end the hike. Thanks to Wendy, Alice and Numa for coming a long way from Eugene for this hike.
