Buffalo RanchMay 4, 2005What a great experience it was to see huge buffalo up close and watch their newborn calves frolicking in the pasture. The occasional showers didn’t dampen our enthusiasm for this 22 mile RT bike ride out the Amazon Path to Fir Butte Road where Don Schroeder’s 120 acre “Bisontenial Ranch” is located. His foreman gave us a personal tour of the facilities and drove us out in a ATV for a close view of the 101 head that roam the ranch’s heavily fenced pastures. We saw calves only hours old that alternately nursed and hid behind their mothers. Later at lunch, we got to sample home-made buffalo jerky. It was delicious! Joan Bradley, Peter Graham and I learned a lot about these magnificent beasts that were so important to the Native Americans and have now become a “healthy meat” once again. It was a most interesting way to spend the mid-day Wednesday on May 4. —Larry Dunlap, leader |
