Scio Covered Bridge Ride
September 19, 2004
Predictions for showers did not stop the five Bicycle Riders. The trip began at the Scio High School under a blue and white sky. Up Ridge Road for seven miles of green rolling farm fields made us all glad to be there. We then headed down a long hill to the Hannah Covered Bridge. As we enjoyed the view of Thomas Creek we were treated to a guide who was there to tell about the building and history of this bridge. She also told us about the Weddle Covered Bridge that was once west of Scio, but has since been moved to Sanke park in Sweet Home for preservation.
Heading west we caught a shower on the way to the Shimanek Bridge where we took shelter until the skies cleared. Our next Bridge was to the southeast. The Larwood Bridge crossing Crabtree creek at 25 miles into our trip. We went on to the Roaring River County park as there was a lovely covered picnic space there. It is about ½ mile beyond the Larwood Bridge park.
After a leisurely and dry lunch we headed west again and came to the Hoffman covered bridge where another guide told of the history and preservation of this and the remaining covered bridges in the area. Looking ahead we saw very dark clouds so we left quickly and expected to be drenched.
We were very lucky as for the next 10 miles back to Scio we dodged dark clouds but got no rain and arrived back at our cars dry and happy with our 48 miles of green farm fields, vintage homes and five covered bridges.
Riders were: Barbara Bruns, Lyn Gilman-Garrick, Sharon Ritchie, Joyce Sanders and Norma Lockyear, leader.
