Scott Mountain via Hand Lake

September 27, 2003

I scheduled this hike for late September believing the weather would more likely be cool. The temperature in Eugene reached 97 degrees. Fortunately most of the hike was in the shade on a north-facing slope.

We hiked to the summit of Scott Mountain via the Hand Lake Trail and a seldom-used, abandoned trail following slash marks on trees. We stopped for rest at an unnamed lake while some went swimming. At the summit it was 70 degrees in the shade with a cool breeze. We ate lunch and enjoyed the view of the Three Sisters. At the Hand Lake area there were still a few purple gentian blooms in the meadow.

Those enjoying the autumn weather were Leona Devine, Maggie Gontrum, Dick Hildreth, Becky Lipton, Rebecca Mikesell, Mike Morin, Don Payne, Tom Woxell and leader Dave Predeek.
