Tahkenitch Creek

June 20, 2003

Mild weather followed us to the coastal trail network at Tahkenitch Dunes. We walked about five miles in all. The terrain varied from lush fern and rhody-lined paths to open, sandy trails that were frequently invisible. We stretched out for lunch on the beach before heading back to the cars. Much of the area adjacent to the beach is off-limits these days to protect the snowy plover. Everyone seemed in good spirits even though we got sidetracked (i.e., lost!) when our last steep, sandy climb took us back to Tahkenitch Campground. So, we walked the last mile on paved “urban trail” (Hwy. 101)! Pete Peterson, Sheila Ward, Max Brown, Dick Hildreth, Carol Petty and Pat Kubotu joined leader Chris Cunningham on this coastal hike.
