Tire Mountain

June 8, 2003

We met at 8:00 at the South Eugene High School parking lot. The morning was cool with high fog. We drove up Highway 58 to Westfir for our rest stop. We drove up the Aufderheide Scenic Drive to the Forest Service gravel road leading up the ridge to our trailhead. We had climbed out of the fog just west of Pleasant Hill. We arrived about 9:00 a.m. and began to hike the 3.8 miles to the high spot on the ridge where a lookout (now gone) had been located. The trail passes through some beautiful old growth forests, mainly noble fir. The surface is covered with a variety of low growing ground cover. The primary attractions of the hike are found in the openings along the ridge, some facing south and others facing west. Here are found the sun-loving vegetation and a wide variety of wildflowers which make the hike such a treat. We had lunch at Tire Mountain at noon then began the hike back down the mountain. We arrived back at the parking lot between 4 and 5:00. Hikers were Nancy Coons, Steve Schriver, Beverly Schriver, Madeline Schriver, Rich Romm, Linda Cheney, Nancy Radius, Maggie Gontrum, Juliana Coons, Charlotte Coons, Bob Voas, Arlene Deyo, and Allan Coons.
