Tahkenitch DunesMay 17, 2003Although Eugene might not have had good weather, we had a perfect day at the coast; sunshine, warm temperatures and a light breeze. We met only four other hikers over the length of the trail and beach. One surprise was the changes to the beach over the winter. The trail ends at a steep drop-off. Tahkenitch Creek is even further south than last fall and the snowy plovers have lost a lot of nesting ground. Unlike last year, there is now plenty of water in Threemile Lake. It was wonderful to see the wild rhododendrons in bloom. We decided to avoid the congestion in Florence due to the Rhododendron Festival and stopped in Mapleton at Alpha-Bit for refreshments. Hikers who seized the day were Carol Petty and leader, Sheila Ward. |
