Little North SantiamMay 14, 2003Six Obsidians, and one “soon to be” Obsidian, were blessed with a beautiful, warm, sunny day when we gathered at 8 a.m. at Amazon. The trailhead for the low elevation, North Santiam River hike is off Santiam HWY 22 in the Elkhorn Valley, about 100 miles from Eugene. The river is a spectacular emerald green color with numerous waterfalls. The hike is through a heavily carpeted, thick canopied old growth forest. The trail is in good condition with with water standing/running on it in a few spots. Excellent bridges cross all feeder streams. Elevation gain of 900' is mostly contained in one steep ridge which bisects the trail. The trail is 4½ miles long, for a total of 9 in and out. We returned to Eugene about 6 p.m. Hikers were Ann-Marie Askew, Max Brown, Walt Dolliver, Sabine Dutoit, Carolyn and Cork Higgins, and Dan Christensen, leader. |
