South & North Shasta Loops + WoodsonMarch 15, 2003Was it the weather report? A big sale at REI? Whatever the reason, a late rash of cancellations reduced our inner city hiking party to just three—Janet Jacobsen, Jeanne Schmidt and Marshall Kandell (leader). We met at the corner of Spring and Firland and skirted the city/county line along Woodson, most of which is gravel. The open view toward Lane CC and Mt. Pisgah was great, until you realize it was only visible because of the fir forest that disappeared a couple of winters ago. Climbing the hill back to the other end of Spring brought us into the land of estates and mansions. As we veered off onto South Shasta Loop, a surprise bonus awaited us. We met the owner-builder of a brand new Tuscan villa style home who invited us in for a tour. What a treat! For the rest of the walk down S. Shasta Loop we shed our sunglasses and put up our hoods against a spirited, but short downpour. The trek up North Shasta Loop was challenging, as usual, but we were rewarded by the sightings of about a dozen deer on the last stretch of the hike. |
