Trail Maintenance Training TripMarch 15, 2003On a rather damp Saturday Sue Baker, of the Lowell office of the Willamette National Forest, took us to the South Willamette Trial. There we learned and practiced basic brushing and treadwork. In one place we constructed a small rock-ford to replace an inadequate culvert. Sue taught us how to use a bow-saw to remove large branches or small trees from the trail—including anticipation of the compression and tension forces on the limb or trunk. Afterwards, we walked up the trail to inspect a turnpike which had been serviced by the Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol the previous summer, and learn about such structures. Present were committee members Joanne Ledet and Martha Welches. Also present were Obsidians Max Brown, Yuan Hopkins and Jerry Brindle. —Wayne Deeter, leader |
