Obsidian Summer Camp in 2003 will be held in the Wallowa –
Whitman National Forest in northeast Oregon at a well situated area located
between the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area and the Hells Canyon Recreation Area. We
will be camping at Coverdale Campground on the Imnaha River, approximately 41
miles from Joseph, Oregon. The Prospectus and Registration Form, available
below, has all the details about Camp Nelson as well as information about costs,
signing up, etc. A Registration Only Form is available if you need extra
registrations. Registrations are being accepted after February 1, 2003.

The Camp Nelson Summer Camp Rally will be on Friday, April
25, 2003, at the Obsidian Lodge. The potluck dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m.,
followed by information and slides of the Camp site, the beautiful Eagle Cap
Wilderness Area, the Snake River Canyon, and surrounding countryside. Both new
campers and experienced campers alike are encouraged to attend this potluck to
learn more about the Camp, to ask questions and to participate in discussions.
The Camp Nelson Booklet will be available to all registered campers at this Camp
Rally. Royal Murdock has again prepared a very informative booklet, including
important information on travel routes, historical and geographical features of
the area, safety precautions, and camp procedures. He has also included a great
summary of the many hikes that can be taken.
In addition, there will be pictures posted of the area,
along with maps. There will be order forms available for you to pick up if you
wish to order maps or other information from the Wallowa Mountains Visitor’s
Center in Enterprise, Oregon.
As you may have heard, Camp Nelson had a tremendous
response. Consequently, there is a very large waiting list, so your spot will
be immediately replaced if the balance of your Summer Camp Registration fee is
not received on or before June 1st. If you paid a $20 deposit and are an
Obsidian member, then your balance is $116; if you are a nonmember, then your
balance is $146; and if you are a child age 6-11 years, then you would owe $46.
All children 5 years and under are free.

The balance of your Summer Camp Registration fee is due on or before June 1st.

You are encouraged to come to the potluck even if you did
not initially make the Camp Roster. Every year there are people on the Camp
Roster, who for various reasons are not able to attend, providing many
opportunities for those on the Wait List to take their places.
If you need a ride to Camp Nelson or are willing to take
passengers, please let Sharon Ritchie know. In addition, there will be sign-up
lists at the April Potluck, where you will be encouraged to sign up if you need
a ride, or if you are willing to take some passengers with you on the ride to
Camp. Sharon Ritchie will coordinate the communication between these two lists
of individuals.
