Obsidian 75th Anniversary Winter Kickoff
December 14, 2002
The Winter Outings Festival was held on December 14, 2002, at the Obsidians Lodge. Despite windy, balmy weather, Obsidians were out in force exploring the toys offered by community vendors and, of course, eating. Six scheduled outings were consolidated to five hikes since there was “no snow” L. In total there were over 75 participants; 54 Obsidians who signed up, 14 non-members and over half a dozen who managed to avoid the signup sheet.
The six vendor tables were crammed with new toys and tools for winter outings. Vendors were: Backcountry Gear Limited, Bergs Ski Shop, City of Eugene Outdoor Program, REI (Recreational Equipment), SportHill, and Willamette Pass and Ullr Sport Shop. Our thanks for their support.
Local suppliers donated more food than we could eat. Suppliers were: Bagel Sphere, Great Harvest Bread, McKenzie Coffee, New Day Bakery (scones), Safeway Bakery in Thurston (donuts), Springfield Creamery (yogurt), The Bagel Bakery, and Starbucks Coffee. Thanks, we enjoyed the great food.
There were a couple dozen door prizes supplied by: Backcountry Gear Limited, SportHill, Willamette Pass, REI, Bill Sullivan, Obsidians Winter Trips, Springfield Cleaners, Rhythm and Blooms, Coffee Time, and Obsidians Climbs. The grand prize was a pair of snowshoes donated by Backcountry Gear.
By 9:30 the four outings had departed. The leaders for the day were: Ann-Marie Askew, Scott Hovis, Jan Jacobsen, Ed Lichtenstein and Jim Whitfield. They will provide separate write-ups of their adventures.
