Broken Top Crater; Tam McArthur Rim; Ball Butte
June 1, 2002
Six skiers ended the Winter Trip season with a spectacular trip from Todd Lake
via its North Ridge to the Crater Ditch Trial into Broken Top Crater.
After lunch in the crater, we continued north on the west side of Ball Butte
to a point on the Tam McArthur Rim just west of Broken Hand at 8200 ft. where
the views included Mt. Jefferson to the north as well as the Three Sisters with
their summits in clouds.
The descent took us on the east side of Ball Butte to snowmobile Road 370
which runs from Three Creek Lake to Todd Lake.
Total time on the route was seven hours.
The weather was near perfect with temperatures in the 60’s, a light breeze,
and intermittent clouds.
Telemark turns were the order of the day, with Harold out nearly every
Tom camped the night before at Green Lakes trailhead while Sue and John car camped
afterwards with plans to ski South Sister the next day.
Thanks to Pete for driving Harold and me — the Cascade Lakes Highway helpfully
had been opened a few days before.
Skiers were Tom Happy, John Mowat, Sue Sullivan, Pete Suttmier, Harold Thompson,
and Dick Hildreth, leader.
