Maxwell Butte ShelterFebuary 9-10, 2002Maxwell Butte shelter is found on few maps and in only some of the newer books because, it has only been here for 6 to 7 years. Situated on top of a ridge, just off the Santiam highway, it offers exquisite views of The Sisters, Mt. Washington, Three Fingered Jack, and Mt. Jefferson. This fully enclosed shelter is relatively easy to get to, with sleeping platforms for 6, plenty of floor space for extra people, 2 picnic tables, a wood stove, and a supply of wood. Max Vollmer and Marsha Barr enjoyed a lovely day skiing in and around the shelter, and vowed to organize another overnight trip so that more people could enjoy this wonderful place. There are several routes in and out ranging from 2½ to 9 miles with varying degrees of difficulty. The elevation gain is only 500 feet on the easiest route. Once at the shelter, there are lots of opportunities for exploration across open clear cut areas, or down various tree lined ridges. |
