Salmon Creek Youth SnowshoeJanuary 19, 200215 youth and 8 adults met at Albertson’s Parking lot in East Springfield. After checking and rechecking the youth for permission slips, adequate clothing and snowshoes, we were off. Our destination was road 1934 off Salmon Creek road above Oakridge. The snow was falling heavily and approximately two inches had accumulated on the road. We reached our spot but opted to drive back a mile to another road for safety’s sake. It took the leaders a while to get everyone geared up and ready to venture up the road. We were not sure what we would find. One driver remained at the car. Our group was well spread out. The snow was not as deep here and the majority chose to leave off their snowshoes for the first ½ mile. Most of the youth were more into a fun time in the snow rather than snowshoeing — some found it too difficult. One leader turned back at a mile with three of the tired youth. We played and attempted to snowshoe on the road before stopping for lunch, the snow had stopped. Several of the adults went on up the road to a rock quarry. The sun began to shine as the fog lifted to reveal a lovely, snow laden valley. We were back to the cars by 1:45, the snow had commenced to melt. This was not a qualifying trip, but a fun, play in the snow day. Leader Gerry Roe was assisted by Obsidians Dave Becker, Peggy Lee Mathes and Jim Pierce. Non-members assisting were: Shaun Hahn, Aaron Pierce, Bob Clemens and driver, Vern. Youth were: Melanie Wheeler, Micah Williams, Michael Pine, Jeremy Ward, Jeremiah Wilkes, Chantel Mark, B.J. Goldsberry, Amanda Kaufmann, Robert Bays, Michael Tackman, Nocona Lockard, William Brophy, Venessa Stayner, Kenneth Huguenard, and Chris Cross. |
