Black Crater

September 13, 2002

We left Amazon Community Center by 8:05 under clear skies with 7 hikers. Another person joined us at the trailhead after being at the wrong meeting place. On the highway we met all 2050 Cycle Oregon bicycle riders. It didn’t really slow us down that much as we were going in opposite directions. The day was warm but most of the trail is in the trees so we didn’t suffer. Besides views of Mt. Washington and Jefferson on the way up we had a distant view of Mt. Hood in the haze. From the top we also had views of North and South Sister, Broken Top and Black Butte. After a quick lunch (the bees were busy) we headed back to the trailhead. By the time we got to the cars all the bicyclists were gone. This hike was a first for some of our group. Enjoying a Friday the 13th hiking in Oregon’s beautiful Cascades were: Max Brown, Dick Hildreth, Royal Murdock, Denny and Jeanne Schmidt, Richard Sundt, Doug Thiesen and leader, Sandra Larsen.
