Chucksney Mountain

August 25, 2002

Thirteen of us met at the South Eugene High School at 7:50. After the Obsidian song and dance we left for Chucksney Mountain. There were high clouds and enough Oregon mist to require an occasional swipe of the wipers across the windshield. We drove up Hwy 58 to the Westfir turnoff then turned north along Aufderhide Drive. There were a number of horses and horseback riders camped and parked at the trailhead. We started hiking in cool clear weather the mist having lifted; the high clouds over the Cascade divide lingered blocking the usual views of the Sisters and other Cascade peaks. We reached the treeless part of Chucksney Mountain's summit ridge at noon and enjoyed warm sunshine and nice views of the Old Cascades. Unfortunately, clouds continued to obscure the main peaks to the east. We were overtaken by a string of horses and riders on the way up, and we found moderate horse droppings and damage to the trail caused by steel shoes.

Hikers were Benton Elliott, David Coombs, Bob Voas, Jane Bartell, Meg Lekander, Sabine Dutoit, Peter Graham, Kristin Peterson, Jerry Wood, Chris Stockdale, Dana Fergerson, Richard Romm and Allan Coons.
