Maxwell Butte

August 24, 2002

Eleven of us started up the trail from the Maxwell Butte Sno-Park in sunlight and cool morning air. The lower stretch of the trail is through a pleasant Doug fir forest with a rich undergrowth of huckleberry, beargrass, vanilla leaf, etc., and quickly enters the Mt. Jefferson wilderness. A substantial rain had preceded us the day before in the mountains leaving the foliage still wet and the trail dust free. After climbing several switchbacks on the south side of the Butte, we reached the summit of this old volcano and found evidence of an old USFS fire tower that burned years ago. Views of the Sisters, Mt. Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack were superb. Along for the hike were: Patty MacAfee, George Baitinger, Dan Christensen, Becky Lipton, Max Brown, Ann-Marie Askew, Effie Neth, Sue Wolling, Jon Day, Bill Simington and Max Vollmer (leader).
