Substitute Point

August 11, 2002

I chose to lead this hike because, though I had hiked the Foley Ridge trail many times, I had never made the side trip up to Substitute Point. The hike under the trees was enjoyable on a fine warm day and late season mosquitoes kept the five of us moving at a steady pace. Josh, whose enthusiasm for insects is contagious, showed us a large cricket that he spotted near the trail. The vista from the top of the Point was as rewarding as I could have imagined; a fine view of the heart of the Three Sisters Wilderness. We enjoyed a leisurely break on the top while soaking up the sights and the sun, then made the dusty hike back to the cars, again feeding mosquitoes as we went.

All in all, it was a fine hike and enjoyable right to the moment my car left the trail head. Suffice it to say (as we all should know anyway), all cars should leave together. To make a long story very short, the folks who had shared a ride in my car went back to town on the bus! Still, all is well that ends well! It was a good day, shared with good folks. I wouldn’t have missed it.

Hikers were: Laurie Funkhouser, Joshua Ladau, Becky Lipton, Peggy Lee Mathes and Doug Nelson, leader.
