Yapoah Crater

August 11, 2002

We left Eugene on a sunny, warm morning in two cars. We were at the trailhead by 10:30. This trail is shared with horses, dogs and hikers. We even saw two goats with little backpacks on their backs being led by a couple. The trail was dusty due to no rain and the above mentioned horses.

About half the trail is in the trees which makes for pleasant hiking. We had views of North and Middle Sister as well as Mt. Washington and Jefferson. Our lunch stop was at South Mattieu Lake. After lunch we continued 2.5 miles to Yapoah Crater. Four of the six of us hiked to the top for super views. We returned to the cars on the same route with Dick and Sabine going back to South Mattieu Lake first. Dick had a swim to cool off. One car stopped at Mom’s for pies and the other returning directly to Eugene.

A big thank you to Dick Hildreth for being unofficial coleader. Hikers were: Sabine Dutoit, Dick Hildreth, Glenn Hoerning, Karen Rayle, Lucy Rayle and Sandra Larsen, leader.
