Fourteen intrepid hikers said “bah, bah, humbug” to the 80% chance of rain forecast
and a downpour in Springfield and appeared at S. Eugene High School to check out this hike in
the east Coburg Hills.
Did we luck out!
It snowed for about 30 seconds at the radio tower, but the rest of the day was mostly sunny with
heavy clouds everywhere else.
That meant that we couldn’t see the Cascades (or even Mt. June, for that matter), but the wet
meadow with a few flowers and rock outcroppings was still glorious.
Several botanists on the trip were busy identifying the flowers and native grasses; and the group
agreed that we needed to return in a month or two when the flowers would be more profuse.
The stalwart hikers were: Dan Bates, Mari Baldwin, Fred Felter, Peter and Kitson Graham,
Mary Ann Holser, Yuan Hopkins, Richard Hughes, Janet Jacobsen, Helen Liguori, Laura Neckels,
Barbara Sutherland, Janice Suratt,
and leader, Lana Lindstrom.
