Chuck the Mountain ManOn Monday, many Obsidians saw and talked with a man walking with two horses along the road near our camp. His name was Chuck Streeper. He has devoted his life to packing in the wilderness living as best as he could like a mountain man. In recent years, he has given up packing in the winter months and presented programs at schools in California. He came for dinner on Monday night and agreed to play the part of the packer in the 1966 McManigal Camp Summer Play. He hammed it up so well that we couldn’t stop laughing. On Tuesday night, we asked him to present a program about the Mountain Man. His stories and life experiences in the mountains were fascinating. People stayed way past bedtime to listen to his tales. It wasn’t easy to find ones’ tent in the dark. We invited him back for dinner on Thursday night so that he could watch our Mountain Man play. One evening, Chuck was able to bring some friends who had a horse that the children could ride. What an addition to camp. If you would like to write to him, his address is: Chuck StreeperHe asks that you not write until November. — Janet Jacobsen |
