Maiden PeakFebruary 17, 2001Under cloudy skies five of us skied from Willamette Pass on the Crest Trail toward Upper Rosary Lake. The snow on the trail was packed and quick. Leaving the lake we set our compasses toward the summit of Maiden Peak. No new snow had fallen for several days and conditions were variable as we broke trail. The weather was mild until the summit was reached just before 1:00 p.m. There, the wind was howling and a quick retreat brought us down to a protected area to enjoy lunch. A very challenging downhill run through the trees on breakable crust brought us back to Rosary Lake and then to our cars by 4:00 p.m. The very strong group of skiers consisted of Mark Slipp, Sam Miller, Bill McWhorter, John Hegg and almost-as-strong-leader Harold Thompson. |
